Review:
When it comes to sports videogames featuring kid characters playing the sports,
the “Backyard”" franchise is the dynasty. Like its other titles, Backyard Basketball's
2007 version is an updated, arcade-style action game-this time starring NBA stars Paul
Pierce, LeBron James, Shaquille O'Neal, Dwyane Wade, Yao Ming and others pros as youngsters.
Play a quick pick-up game or choose players to create your own team to play a single game
or an entire season right into the play-offs. Adjust game difficulty, length of quarters,
fouls, fatigue, shot assistance, and the dribble down the court in fast-action game play
that actually includes real basketball strategy—or just run-and-gun for fun. Power-ups click
in and players suddenly are racing faster in a tornado-like swirl or shooting the lights out
from just about anywhere.
Adding to the appeal is always the background sights and sounds of this series.
The noises of kids playing hoops are amusing here—though the “yeah!” shout after every
basket wears on you after a while. B-Ball nerds will like keeping stats and mini-perfectionists
can spend extra time in the mini-games practicing hot shots, block shots and ball handling.
Buddies with a game-link cable can even play each other.
So long as you're not looking for a realistic basketball sim, this is all full-court
fun—-even on the tiny Gameboy Advance screen.
